Concrete Flatwork
While concrete’s initial costs can be higher than other materials, its life-cycle costs are much lower. Homeowners are well acquainted with concrete’s durability, fire safety, and proven low-maintenance.
Concrete is one of the most preferred paving solutions in Virginia. Not all concrete solutions are made equal however. Some solutions can result in unwanted and unforeseen issues. These issues can include pavement not being as durable as advertised and causing potholes and loose gravel to form.
That’s why here at Whites Concrete, we make sure to have the capacity to provide quality mixes from long-lasting material. Our premium concrete mix design ensures you receive a quality product that lasts.
With over 15 years of experience and counting, the Whites Concrete team can handle any concrete project in the Hampton Roads Area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton and Suffolk).
What is Flatwork?
Concrete flatwork is any poured surface that moves along a horizontal plane. Flatwork surfaces include patios, walkways sidewalks, foundations, driveways and any other flat surface. Concrete is the choice material for flatwork due to how it can form a perfectly flat and even surface.
Flatwork is formed with a frame and a sub base made up of either rebar or aggregate rock. The sub base will strengthen the concrete and prevent cracks from forming under pressure and age.
Concrete pros will first section off and frame the area where the concrete feature will be located. They make a frame out of wood that will act as a mold for when the concrete is poured. The mold will eventually be cut away, but it will ensure that the concrete is poured at the right depth and dryer even and flat.
Decorative Concrete
It’s true that decorative concrete is more expensive than plain concrete. Coloring and texturing concrete so that it looks like brick of flagstone generally doubles the cost. But using actual brick or flagstone is two to ten times as expensive as using decorative concrete. Concrete creates the same custom look, and gives a better performance, for a fraction of the cost.
With the exciting new coloring and texturing technologies now at work, concrete can create a cohesive look that begins with driveways and walks that coordinate with the home’s exterior, and carries through into patios and retaining walls that blend naturally with their surroundings.
With technological advances that allow it to take on virtually any color, texture or shape, concrete is redefining its role on the residential landscape. Concrete’s design flexibility makes it a leading player in a design process that puts increasing emphasis on outdoor space.
The only material with the ability to give a coordinated look to all of the home’s exterior elements, concrete has become a powerful design tool for “homescaping.” That, combined with its affordability, durability, and top-level performance in any climate, makes it the best choice for today’s homeowner.
Pleasing decorative finishes can be built into concrete during construction. Variations in the color and texture of concrete surfaces are limited only by the imagination of the designer and the skill of the concrete craftsman.
